W. E. Best is a Baptist pastor and an excellent teacher of the Bible. The author chose this title (not to sin) to describe the Christ because it expresses the divine truth that Christ could not sin for the reason that as God He was perfectly holy, and as man He was perfectly holy. 'Holiness is far more than the absence of sin; it is positive virtue. The Lord Jesus could not sin because the days of His flesh meant only addition of experience, not variation of character. Holy humanity was united to Holy Deity in one indivisible Person, the impeccable Christ.' It could not be otherwise, else, the holy Deity would have been defiled by any unholiness in the human flesh. This book slays completely Satan's lie which says that Christ was human, therefore, He 'could have sinned, but did not.' Yes, He was 'tempted (tried) in all respects according to our likeness, apart from sin.' However, the trial, or test, was to demonstrate His perfect holiness, that regardless of stress or trial, it was impossible for Him to sin. In short but powerful sentences, the author comprehends the mysterious and marvelous Person who is the Christ. He covers such pregnant subjects as The Eternal Son of God; The Son Declares the Father; The Mystery of Godliness; The Incarnation; the Virgin Birth; Christ's Human Nature; Christ's Human Soul; Christ's Human Growth; Christ's Baptism; Christ's Temptation; Christ's Impeccable Life; The God-approved Man; Christ's Prayer Life; The Drawing Power of Christ; Christ's Discriminating Message; Christ's Miracles; Christ's Death; Christ's Headship; and, Christ's Kingship.

Has the passing of the old God paved the way for a new kind of religious project, a more responsible way to seek, sound, and love the things we call divine? Has the suspension of dogmatic certainties and presumptions opened a space in which we can encounter religious wonder anew? Situated at the split between theism and atheism, we now have the opportunity to respond in deeper, freer ways to things we cannot fathom or prove. Distinguished philosopher Richard Kearney calls this condition ana-theos, or God after God-a moment of creative 'not knowing' that signifies a break with former sureties and invites us to forge new meanings from the most ancient of wisdoms. Anatheism refers to an inaugural event that lies at the heart of every great religion, a wager between hospitality and hostility to the stranger, the other the sense of something 'more.' By analyzing the roots of our own anatheistic moment, Kearney shows not only how a return to God is possible for those who seek it but also how a more liberating faith can be born. Kearney begins by locating a turn toward sacred secularity in contemporary philosophy, focusing on Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Paul Ricoeur. He then marks 'epiphanies' in the modernist masterpieces of James Joyce, Marcel Proust, and Virginia Woolf. Kearney concludes with a discussion of the role of theism and atheism in conflict and peace, confronting the distinction between sacramental and sacrificial belief or the God who gives life and the God who takes it away. Accepting that we can never be sure about God, he argues, is the only way to rediscover a hidden holiness in life and to reclaim an everyday divinity.

The God of the Machine presents an original theory of history and a bold defense of individualism as the source of moral and political progress. When it was published in 1943, Isabel Paterson's work provided fresh intellectual support for the endangered American belief in individual rights, limited government, and economic freedom. Her book placed her in the vanguard of the free-enterprise movement now sweeping the world. It will be essential to students of American history, political theory, and literature.

It began with an eclipse. In 1806, the Shawnee leader Tenskwatawa ('The Open Door') declared himself to be in direct contact with the Master of Life, and therefore, the supreme religious authority for all Native Americans. Those who disbelieved him, he warned, 'would see darkness come over the sun.' William Henry Harrison, governor of the Indiana Territory and future American president, scoffed at Tenskwatawa. If he was truly a prophet, Harrison taunted, let him perform a miracle. And Tenskwatawa did just that, making the sun go dark at midday. In The Gods of Prophetstown, Adam Jortner provides a gripping account of the conflict between Tenskwatawa and Harrison, who finally collided in 1811 at a place called Tippecanoe. Though largely forgotten today, their rivalry determined the future of westward expansion and shaped the War of 1812. Jortner weaves together dual biographies of the opposing leaders. In the five years between the eclipse and the battle, Tenskwatawa used his spiritual leadership to forge a political pseudo-state with his brother Tecumseh. Harrison, meanwhile, built a power base in Indiana, rigging elections and maneuvering for higher position. Rejecting received wisdom, Jortner sees nothing as preordained-Native Americans were not inexorably falling toward dispossession and destruction. Deeply rooting his account in a generation of scholarship that has revolutionized Indian history, Jortner places the religious dimension of the struggle at the fore, recreating the spiritual landscapes trod by each side. The climactic battle, he writes, was as much a clash of gods as of men. Written with profound insight and narrative verve, The Gods of Prophetstown recaptures a forgotten turning point in American history in time for the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Tippecanoe.

For years the term 'IN GOD WE TRUST' has labeled our currency and our country and I have been proud to have served my nation and its motto for twenty two years of military service. With that in mind I am disappointed to see the spiritual direction that America is going in. There has been a real assault on the Bible - The Word of God and especially Christianity. I still want to believe that God wants to bless America but I must be honest, I have my doubt that 'In God We Trust' probably has seen its better days. What really bothers me is I'm concerned America's motto today is IN GOD WE TRUST, or do we?'

Must we experience the loving violence of God as did Moses and the Israelites? For the last 25 years, I have been absorbed in the seldom-appreciated Old Testament Book of Numbers and its adjacent books, culminating in my writing this novel. In The God Whom Moses Knew, the reader uncovers God's strong passions, His vulnerability, the reasons for His just wrath and violence, and His determination to lead His reluctant people through a dangerous wilderness on a pilgrimage of eternal merit. Experience the profound feelings and the intense struggles of God's devoted servant, Moses: the calamitous desertion of God by His recently freed, scrappy and frightened people: a humble, brave, cretinous craftsman: the savage foreign armies who attack a vulnerable people: the dependable, loyal Joshua: a wily magician who threatens disaster: tribal leaders who foment a rebellion: and trained temptresses who lure soldiers to worship other gods. Can you identify with any of these challenges in your own journey toward the God Whom Moses Knew? By 'bringing to life' the Biblical people and their culture, the author helps the reader feel like YOU ARE THERE. Recommended reading for all, including Biblical neophytes ..'.like me.' Drawing on family history and his own story, noted theologian and pastoral leader Fr. Louis J. Cameli takes readers on an archaeological exploration into the faith passed down across time and place. Beginning in his ancestral home in Italy and tracing the story through the centuries, Cameli unearths layers of faith to lead readers to a clearer understanding of their own faith as a legacy from the community of the Church. In The Archaeology of Faith, Fr. Louis Cameli digs into his ancestry to uncover the source of his own faith and invites believers and seekers alike to examine their own faith in the context of history and within the community of the Church. Tracing the evolution of faith from pre-Christian times in his ancestral village of Grottamare on Italy’s Adriatic coast, Cameli discovered how faith intersects with the most basic predicaments of life. While studying the rise of monasticism, he learned that faith is lived in community. As he looked at the medieval raids of Saracen pirates, Cameli found a sense of living with vulnerability. Finally, he realized that trust in God was modeled for him by the relatives who farm the same land today as their ancestors did. As Cameli studied the rich complexity of faith in his family history, he reflected on his own life, his vocation, and the personal challenges that his beliefs pose. Cameli is a highly respected priest in the Archdiocese of Chicago, where he has served as the Cardinal’s delegate for formation and mission and is a frequent speaker at conferences and workshops.
