Gengoroh Tagame (田亀 源五郎, Tagame Gengorō, born 3 February 1964) is an openly gay Japanese manga artist, one of the most influential creators in the field of manga for gay male readers.

Not many of Tagame’s books have been given a proper English translation due to the lack of a giant audience, but some publishers have seen the worth and craft of Gengoroh Tagame. Ryan Sands and Michael Deforge’s anthology Thickness featured a story called Standing Ovations by Tagame, and it was his English debut.

Since then, he’s been featured in Ed Luce’s Oafanthology (a very graphic fold-out poster), and has been published by Picturebox and German publisher Bruno Gmünder Verlag.

Aside from Thickness and The Passion of Gengoroh Tagame, his work is easily accessible to find online. Here’s a link to some Youtube videos of his work and exhibitions if you’re interested.

Yaichi is a work-at-home suburban dad in contemporary Tokyo; formerly married to Natsuki, father to their young daughter, Kana. Their lives suddenly change with the arrival at their doorstep of a hulking, affable Canadian named Mike Flanagan, who declares himself the widower of Yaichi’s estranged gay twin, Ryoji. Mike is on a quest to explore Ryoji’s past, and the family reluctantly but dutifully takes him in. What follows is an unprecedented and heartbreaking look at the state of a largely still-closeted Japanese gay culture: how it’s been affected by the West, and how the next generation can change the preconceptions about it and prejudices against it.
(Please note: This book is a traditional work of manga, and reads back to front and right to left.)
